UT3 Level - Oriental Temple - Third-person Platformer
The Oriental temple map consists of two levels which are linked via level streaming; the first map is to allow the player to explore the outside of the temple by simply running around, and the second map is the level with the game mechanics in it.
I have always been inspired by oriental and Asian themes, and I do enjoy a lot of games which are developed in Japan. With this in mind, I decided to create two short levels surrounding these themes. I felt that creating a normal Unreal tournament map, such as ‘Death Match’ or ‘Capture the Flag’, would not be appropriate for the themes as well as a Puzzle/Platformer would be. So I took the challenge of learning how to use the Unreal visual scripting ‘Kismet’ so I could design and develop the level within the Unreal Tournament editor, however it would play as a third-person Puzzle/Platformer game.
The first level is a sandbox-style level which automatically starts off as a cut-scene, which once finished allows players to walk around the level before starting the next level. The second level is triggered when the player approaches the front door of the temple in the first level; the second level throws the player to a level based within the temple, and the aim for the player is to collect five keys scattered across the temple. These keys all have different obstacles surrounding them so the player has to be stealthy and quick to collect them. These obstacles are things such as enemy bots running down certain paths, and acid pools.
These levels were designed to be the beginning levels to a Puzzle/Platformer game created in this editor, and I believe that the core mechanics are set, so further levels could easily be created to add on to the game experience.
There is a development video below, along with a play-through video underneath the development video.
These levels were developed in the Unreal Tournament 3 editor, and these levels were submitted to my ‘Portfolio’ module at University, where I was graded a ‘First’ (A)
Below are videos of the development of the levels, in addition to a run-through of game.To download these levels: Click here!
